If You Can Visualize It, You Can Realize It
Viktor Frankl used to imagine himself lecturing on psychotherapy while he was confined in the Nazi concentration camps. His practice of this felt so real to him that he attributed it to providing his life with meaning despite the horror of his physical surroundings.
While being confined at home is far from the reality of life in a concentration camp, many people are stuck in their own heads right now and struggling due to feeling a lack of progress or meaning caused by being pulled away from our regular routines.
Working from home can be a slog and our workouts don’t feel as productive or effective as the stasis drags on.
In order to completely turn around your outlook and find more opportunities to grow in this time of physical distancing, turn inward to your mental landscape and visualize those actions in your life that fulfill you and give you meaning.
Not only can this create a more positive framework for your mind, but decades of research into peak performance and neuroscience have also shown that our brains don’t distinguish mental rehearsals from physical practices very well and we can and do improve our performance just by visualizing.
Perfect practice, whether physical or mental is key to performing at a higher level and increasing mastery.
In this week’s video, I talk about the power of visualization and how you can use it to maintain and even improve your performance of training, competing, and even presenting while stuck at home. '
